There is nothing better in the world than getting a package in the mail.
I went to boarding school. So this has long been true for me. Since the time I was 11 or so packages have been one of the most exciting things to receive. Particularly when they come from someone as lovely as my mother who had a habit of enclosing odd and interesting things in packages....yeah...like the time she put an After Eight between the pages of a letter. I don't know if you know that great British after dinner mint but I think all I need to say is "liquid center". That's right...I had to lick the mint and chocolate off the letter to read it. Nice thought though. But I digress.
Packages. Good. Always good. Even if it is something you ordered and know is coming.
When they contain beautiful things, particularly things handmade by a friend they are even more wonderful.
When they contain extra little bits of fabulousness (like gorgeous vintage buttons, and a fun card and lovely smelling lavender? All tied up with brown paper and pink yarn? Why, I think I just entered package heaven.
The photo is of the most gorgeous scarf made of antique kimono silk which was dyed (with kool aid? who knew!) and sewn by the talented Cal (Ms. Hodge Podge herself). And even though it is over 90 degrees here most days, I'll find an excuse to wear it soon. It is too pretty to be hanging in my bedroom for the next 3 months.
So today..I'm urging you to send someone something they aren't expecting. Or order something for yourself that you know you will love. It doesn't have to be expensive. But it SHOULD be slightly frivlolous. A spy novel, a print you have been eyeing, a piece of handmade clothing. Something special you can't get in a store. Or just send a card to a friend.
Doesn't matter if you are sending or receiving...packages (or cards or letters) are such a great way to make someone's day.
ps This post was not supposed to sound like a plug for the USPS! I'm just a fan of snail mail :)
